Morning Routines… We all have them don’t we? But are they working for us or against us? These routines can set us up for another day on autopilot, feeling a lack of energy and those all to common feelings of anxiety, or these routines can reset our thoughts and body, for a day where things just seem, well… Easier!
Want to feel better, both mentally and physically every day? Get a morning routine which works for you. Don’t believe me? Have a look at these 3 simple steps:
1. First thing, focus on you
Before you rush around looking after others, waking the kids for school or start work, spend time tuning into yourself. Turn OFF the Autopilot and get present!
Do: Go outside, feel the day and stop. Take 10 slow, full, deep breaths and do a mental checklist of all the good things in your life. Feel grateful for those. This will get you seeing the big picture.
2. Drink
After a long night’s sleep, we’re dehydrated. Your degree of dehydration depends on many things: if we had alcohol last night, medication, our age – as the older we get, the quieter our thirst signals become and also how dehydrated we were the day before. If we’re always in water deficit, then we’re ignoring the most simplest way we can improve our mental and physical health.
Do: Get the biggest glass you can find and pour it full of warm water, add some lemon and drink slowly. Wait 30 minutes before eating. This will build your appetite also.
3. Eat a breakfast that makes you feel good
If you have the same breakfast every morning, on this morning, notice how it makes you feel. Many of us don’t realise food has the capacity to make us feel good both physically and emotionally. Often though, we eat the same thing, oblivious to how it makes us feel.
Do: Notice while you’re eating, any sudden feelings of: tiredness, heaviness, nausea, slight pains in the stomach or emotions such as negativity or anxiety. If you do notice this, your body is not happy with that particular food anymore. Have a different breakfast for the next couple of days and be aware of any changes. You should feel energised and content after breakfast.
We have the rest of the day to focus on others and work. Will we be doing our best if we only feel just a fraction of ourselves?
Give 30 minutes to yourself every morning and feel the difference and… you will be doing everyone a favour.
So tell me… what morning routine works for your health?
P.S. If there’s anyone in your life (friend, family, employee) who feels a little on ‘autopilot’ please share this blog. It might be the fresh perspective they need to feel better.
