We have more sick people on this planet than ever before and I love that saying “do what you’ve always done – get what you’ve always got.’ I believe we already have the answers within us, but we don’t have the faith to access these. Our body has the ability to heal if we allow it time to do its job… a bit like having a self-cleaning oven!
For centuries, healers have connected mental and physical health and in recent years, science has begun to recognize that these powerful connections rule our health and always have.
The beliefs we hold about our self, our emotions, our memories, and our habits all can influence mental and physical health. What is going on in our mind and heart, and what is happening in our body, form the psycho-emotional roots of health and disease. Let’s take a closer look.
Russian space scientists were the first to discover that every thought or feeling we have triggers the release of tiny chemical proteins called neuro-peptides (NP’s).
Our cells produce hundreds of different NP’s, each with its own unique function. Hormones, endorphins (feel good), cortisol (stress hormone), and adrenaline (another stress hormone) are some examples.
As we experience an emotion, its frequency activates our body to release appropriate NP’s in response (positive or negative.) You know this from when you’ve experienced butterflies in your stomach when you feel nervous, or when you heart feels like it is pounding out of your chest when you are under intense stress. We don’t need any more evidence that it health is rule by mind-body.
Positive emotions will make beneficial NP’s such as endorphins or oxytocin. Negative emotions will make stress NP’s. These are helpful when an immediate response or action is needed, but are harmful when released over a prolonged period of time.
Any prolonged negative mental state will inevitably weaken our body. By the time we see physical symptoms, we’ve probably held that state of being for quite some time.
So our body actually becomes weaker or stronger depending on our mental state! Yes this is what being a human being is all about. Society and our ‘medical leaders’ have incorrectly taught us to separate the two. We couldn’t be on a more wrong path!
Getting back to emotions – so feelings of shame resonates at the lowest vibration, followed by guilt, and then apathy, grief, fear, anxiety, anger and hate. Conversely, trust, optimism, willingness, acceptance, forgiveness, understanding, love, reverence, joy, serenity and enlightenment strengthen our body and balance our immunity. Stuck or repressed emotions appear to be especially harmful to physical health.
Recent medical studies prove that depression is a greater cause of heart disease than smoking. Researchers found that in depressed people, the blood platelets became more sticky, clogging arteries and veins.
So I want to share with your something amazing that Dr Kelly Brogan wrote recently, who has a cutting edge practice for women’s mental health in New York. She left the conventional medicine field after realizing that she was doing her patients more harm than good. She now treats in holistic medicine working with both mind-body and is actually getting people better again.
I invite you to read what she wrote (below) which you can use right away for your own health. When you’re reading it, keep an open mind and let the words sink in.
I believe in fierce grace…
And the fierce part comes first, in the form of commitment to a higher level of care for yourself – Body, mind and spirit – than most of us are comfortable with and here you send your body a very different signal. A signal that informs a truce. You say, I will prioritize caring for you – nourishing, cleansing, and generally honoring you. And this gesture – even if you don’t even feel it authentically from the start – incites a response.
The Body responds with the dissolution of symptoms and early indications that it is, in fact, listening, and that a conversation has begun. But there is a point at which you understand the cosmic hierarchy, and then you bow down to its wisdom and give your Body permission to do its thing, its way.
And then your Body shows you where the journey is taking you. A clear Body feels intuitively what is right and what is wrong. And as long as your mind is receptive and not reactive, then there are no longer any mental decisions to make. It all becomes a happening.
The tyranny of perfect health and happiness…
The goal cannot and should not be perfect health and happiness. Why not? Because these goals imply that the process of Body truce and honor is simply a means to an outcome that is ever receding into the future.
But we are here, right now, having a real embodied experience of this lifetime. It is rich with strangeness and wonder, and if you are courageous enough, it will be peppered with mystical opportunities to grow and to look deeper into the hurt places that need attention, love, and care…and you won’t call them problem symptoms any longer. You’ll call them invitations to finally, truly be yourself.
I’d love to hear you thoughts on the above – do you feel like it’s a weight off you shoulders to know that your health and happiness doesn’t have to be perfect? Click here to go to the Group Page – Nutrition For Life Community and let me know your experiences or thoughts, I’d love to hear from you!
